Zavier studied Vivica's reaction, unsure of how she'd take it. After a moment of silence, he asked, “Would you be willing to have dinner with him tonight? If you agree, I can make the arrangements.”
Vivica looked up at Zavier, her expression still tense. “I don't know what Mr. Smith told you, but his sudden arrival puts me in a very difficult position. He said I look like his aunt and wanted me to pretend to be her long-lost daughter and visit them in Sydville. But as you know, my son is sick and needs me. The business trip was one thing—it was for work. This, however, has nothing to do with me…”
Zavier quickly followed her line of reasoning. “Yes, I understand, and I explained your situation to Mr. Smith. But he mentioned you have a fiancé now, so he assumed someone would be there to look after your child.”
At the mention of her fiancé, a flicker of pain crossed Zavier's eyes. He knew he had no right to ask, but he couldn't stop himself. “If I may venture a guess... is your fiancé the Mr. Baird I met in the hospital room that day?”
Vivica's eyes shot up to meet Zavier's. She didn't say anything, but her silence was an answer.
Zavier managed a faint smile. “I see.”
Vivica pressed her lips together, her feelings a tangled mess. But thinking of everything Joseph had done for her, she decided to be brave. “We're planning to get married this week,” she said firmly. “He'll be my husband soon.”
She hadn't publicly announced it to her colleagues, wanting to avoid a barrage of questions. But since Zavier already knew and had guessed who it was, there was no point in hiding it from him.
Zavier's eyes widened in shock. He looked at her, words catching in his throat.
Finally, he forced a smile. “You're moving up in the world. That's great. So… congratulations.”
