Joseph lowered his head to look at her, noticing the tip of her nose was red and her eyes were glistening. He frowned slightly. “What’s wrong? Did giving you money somehow make you angry?”

“No…” Vivica looked up, her eyes indeed welling with tears. Her voice trembled. “Are you being so good to me just because you feel sorry for me after what happened tonight?”

Joseph turned his head, a look of exasperated amusement on his face. “The PIN is your birthday. How could I have possibly set this up on the spur of the moment? I had this card made before my business trip; I just got too busy and forgot to give it to you.”

Vivica stared at him, but the tears wouldn’t stop.

Noticing Chaim stir on the bed, Joseph lowered his voice. “Don’t cry. You’ll wake him up.”

Vivica quickly glanced at her son and immediately reined in her emotions. Turning back, she looked at the card and sighed wistfully. “No wonder so many women are desperate to marry into wealthy families. The rich really are generous.”

Joseph laughed again, replying candidly, “I’m generous, not all wealthy people are. There are plenty of rich men who are incredibly stingy.”

Vivica nodded. “That’s true. It’s Mr. Baird who’s a good man.”

“So now I’m a good man?” Joseph teased her. “Who was it that used to call me sharp-tongued and argue with me all the time?”

Seeing his smug expression, Vivica immediately started laying on the flattery. “That was my mistake. I was naive and superficial back then.”

Joseph’s smile brightened. “Alright, it’s late. You go to bed. I’m going to take a shower.”
