The IVF Secret That Shook a Dynasty novel Chapter 266

If he asked her about it later, she could just say she had been too busy with work.

...

The north was already blanketed in snow and ice, but the south was a vibrant canvas of green trees and blooming flowers. As the car drove through the streets, Vivica was surprised to see girls in miniskirts.

The last time she’d been to Sydville was during college for a job fair. Years had passed, and the city had transformed completely. The bright blue sky, the warm sun, and the fiery pink bougainvillea lifted her spirits, which had been gloomy for weeks. A sense of lightness washed over her.

It was no wonder people recommended travel as a cure for life’s setbacks. A change of scenery, a chance to see the world and reconnect with yourself, really could be restorative.

She spent the entire afternoon immersed in work, with no time for other thoughts. During brief lulls, she would check her phone for any calls from Melanie, wanting to stay updated on Chaim.

The four o’clock meeting dragged on past six. Suddenly, Vivica’s phone vibrated. She glanced at the screen and saw Joseph’s name flashing. Her heart began to pound.

He must not have gotten her call and was now calling to demand an explanation.

Vivica silenced her phone, unable to answer in the middle of the meeting. Once the screen went dark, she opened WhatsApp.

[Still in a meeting. Did you need something?]

Back in Riverdale, Joseph read her message, a faint smirk playing on his lips. So, she was going to play games with him.

[What city are you hiding from me in? Today is the second day. Are you planning to go back on your word?]

Vivica bit her lip and messaged back. [I’m not hiding from you. It’s a work trip. I figured Chaim was in good hands, so I agreed to go.]

Feeling her excuse wasn't convincing enough, she added, [I took so much time off recently, and I’m still on probation. My boss has been very understanding, so I need to take my job seriously.]

Joseph, who had some free time, stared at his phone, waiting for her reply. Her explanation seemed plausible, and the annoyance on his face softened slightly.

[If your reasons are so valid, why did you hide it from me? Isn’t it because you were afraid I wouldn’t let you go?]

Vivica was about to type a retort when Zavier turned to look at her. She quickly put her phone down and refocused on the meeting.

Across the table, the client’s representative, a man in his thirties named Raymond Smith, kept glancing at Vivica with a thoughtful expression.

In Riverdale, Joseph saw that Vivica had gone silent again. Figuring she really was busy, he sighed and let it go.
