He didn’t think there was anything wrong with that desire. The only thing wrong was the timing. He knew Vivica hadn't fully accepted him into her heart. She was only compromising for the sake of her son.
As they stood in silence, Vivica looked at his tightly pressed lips and severe brow, and a wave of guilt washed over her. He was willing to make such a huge sacrifice for her child, yet here she was, the beneficiary of his kindness, hesitating and second-guessing everything.
It was a testament to Joseph’s character and patience that he hadn't already called her out for being difficult. Any other man would have lost his temper by now.
At that thought, Vivica looked up and tried to explain. “It’s not that I’m rejecting you, it’s just… I’ve had a child. My body and other things… they’ve changed. I’m afraid that you’ll be—”
Oh, God. Vivica felt like she was on fire. How was she supposed to explain the physical changes a woman’s body goes through after childbirth? She had been diligent about her postpartum recovery, but she knew she could never return to the way she was before. She was afraid that when the moment came, she would disappoint him.
Joseph listened, and though he didn’t grasp the full extent of her worries, he understood the core of it. She felt insecure because she’d had a child and was worried about his experience.
“What are you thinking about?” he asked, his tone serious. “Our goal is to have a child to save Chaim, isn't it? Why should anything else matter?”
Vivica’s eyes widened as she stared at him.
“So, you do care about your image in my eyes,” Joseph added with a faint smile, hitting the nail on the head.
Vivica immediately looked down again. “No, you’ve misunderstood.”
He didn't press the point. Instead, his gaze swept over her thoughtfully before he said, “You have a great image. You’re beautiful, your skin is flawless, and you’re tall and graceful.”
