Roderic paused, momentarily confused. But his mind was quick, and he caught on almost immediately. “Oh, right. Ms. Lynn is doing fine as well. She’s been with Chaim.”
Joseph’s mood soured instantly. How ungrateful. He had been seriously injured for her, was suffering through immense pain, and yet she seemed perfectly content, not even bothering to send a single message to check on him all afternoon.
“Home,” Joseph said, his voice laced with ice as he picked up his phone.
Roderic followed him out. “Aren’t we going to the hospital?”
“Is the hospital my home?” Joseph shot back.
Roderic frowned, wondering what had caused his boss’s temper to flare up so suddenly.
Once in the car, Joseph looked down at his phone. The WhatsApp icon showed dozens of unread messages, a common sight for him. Between work groups, case-specific chats, clients, and police contacts, his inbox was a constant flood. He opened the app, intending to skim through and reply to the most urgent ones.
His eyes immediately landed on a profile picture of a field of sunflowers. It was Vivica’s. She had taken the photo on a trip years ago, liked it, and had never bothered to change it.
His heart skipped a beat. Forgetting everything else, he tapped on their chat.
[How are you feeling? Is the pain bad?]
[I know you’re busy, but please try to get some rest. Your health is the most important thing.]
The messages had been sent over an hour ago. He frowned. When had he started sleeping so soundly? He hadn't heard a thing.
His eyes flicked to the top of his screen, and he cursed inwardly. He had forgotten to turn the ringer back on.
An hour had passed. He wondered if she was already asleep.
After only a moment’s hesitation, he closed the app and dialed her number directly.
