Joseph’s expression shifted, a flicker of displeasure crossing his face. “Don’t paint all men with the same brush. There are good ones out there.”
Vivica paused, realizing the implication behind his words. A hint of awkwardness crept into her voice. “I wasn’t talking about you,” she mumbled. “I was just stating a fact.”
Joseph’s stern features relaxed slightly. “It’s for the best that there’s nothing between you and that man. Fletcher is cunning, and I’d hate for him to find any evidence he could use against you in court tomorrow.”
“I know. I’m not that foolish,” Vivica replied, her voice still low, a touch of petulance in her tone.
Joseph had misjudged her, but his pride wouldn’t allow for a swift apology. Instead, after a moment of silence, he stepped forward and handed her the file he was carrying. “The hearing is tomorrow. Review all of this and be prepared.”
“Oh,” she said, taking the documents.
“If you have any questions, just ask.”
“Okay.”
A strange quiet fell between them. The thought that he had come all this way just to bring her the file softened her frustration.
“Have you had lunch?” Vivica asked.
“No, I came straight from the courthouse.”
Hearing this softened her even more. She looked up at him. “Well… you should head upstairs. I’m sure your parents saved you some food.”
Joseph nodded, but as he turned to leave, he glanced back. “Are you staying here?”
“I…” Vivica hesitated. Her mother had come and gone, and so had Zavier. Her “mission” in the standard room was complete. “I’ll ask a nurse to help me move back upstairs in a little while,” she explained.
Joseph had been about to offer to take her himself, but since she had a plan, he didn’t push it. “Fine. Suit yourself,” he said coolly, then turned and left.
Vivica watched him go. The moment the door closed, she let out a long, slow breath. Thinking back to the previous night, her cheeks grew warm. Yet today, his attitude was cold and unpredictable, a stark contrast to his gentle concern from before. She sighed softly. She had been reading too much into it. He was probably just being kind, helping her out of pity, not because he had any other intentions.
