“Quintina, don’t say things like that!”
Vivica couldn't believe her best friend could be so bold, teasing her right in front of Joseph. She tried to shush her, but the sudden movement pulled at the cuts on her face, making her wince in pain.
“Look at you, covered in bruises, and still getting worked up,” Quintina scolded, her voice laced with concern. She then turned her gaze to Joseph.
“Mr. Baird, do you have any cold water in the car? You should get a bottle for her to press against her face, or the swelling will be even worse tomorrow.”
Quintina directed Joseph without a hint of hesitation.
Joseph was taken aback. Given his status, people were usually deferential, even timid, when speaking to him. Yet this woman, a complete stranger, was ordering him around as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
His first instinct was to ignore her, but one look at Vivica’s miserable state made his body move on its own. He leaned over, opened the small car refrigerator, and pulled out a bottle of chilled water.
“Here,” he grunted, handing the bottle to Vivica.
Vivica glanced at him. “Thank you…” she murmured, taking the water.
Quintina, still turned around in her seat, continued her matchmaking. “Mr. Baird, you’ve never had a girlfriend, have you? You don’t know the first thing about being gentle with a woman. Vivica’s arm is injured too; it must hurt for her to hold that bottle herself.”
Roderic, who was driving, had managed to keep a straight face until now, but at that, he nearly burst out laughing. This Ms. Christie was a force of nature, a born matchmaker who wasn't intimidated in the slightest by his boss’s powerful aura. What a woman!
Vivica, on the other hand, was mortified.
“Quintina, that’s enough! One more word and I’ll have you thrown out of this car,” Vivica threatened, so embarrassed she wished she could jump out herself.
“Oh? This is Mr. Baird’s car. Are you already calling the shots?” Quintina, a true social powerhouse, was unfazed by the threat.
