The Heiress They Couldn't Break (Amelia and Jeremy) novel Chapter 540

Chapter 540 Funeral

Out of the three brothers, Maxwell had always thought he was the lucky one-at least he hadn’t been played the worst.

But thinking back, almost everything he owned had been scammed out of him. Even his real estate had been tricked into being transferred in her name.

If their father hadn’t been strict-freezing part of his assets and cutting down his monthly allowance and trust funds-then…

Maxwell didn’t even dare imagine what he would’ve become.

Now that he really thought about it, Miguel had nearly lost his life—and Maxwell himself had been conned down to damn near nothing.

It seemed like only Marcelo had cut his losses fast enough to keep the damage minimal.

“Marcelo, why didn’t you tell us earlier what Gianna really was?”

“Ha. How many times did I say it? You were the one determined to be stupid and punish yourself. What was I supposed to do?”

Marcelo’s nerves were shredded. He didn’t have the patience to waste words on his idiotic youngest brother.

Their father’s sudden death. The company. The family. One disaster after another, all landing on his shoulders.

Their mother was ill, their father was gone, and as the eldest, he had to hold everything up.

Their father had always been busy, but “busy” was different from “gone.” The loss still ripped through him-raw and brutal.

He just couldn’t show it—not as a man, not as the oldest son.

After throwing out that line, Marcelo went straight back to the study to handle urgent matters, making and taking countless calls.

Once he went upstairs, Miguel and Maxwell quietly returned to their rooms too, each dealing with whatever they could.

The house had already felt suffocating. Now it felt like it was crushing them.

None of them had crawled out of the grief of their father’s sudden death-or the fury of being deceived by Gianna and Regina.

The next day.

The Nygards held a low-key funeral. Only close families and friends came-people who truly had ties to them.

Marcelo and his two brothers wore black suits with white mourning flowers pinned to their chests. They stood at the front of the memorial hall, solemnly receiving guests who came to pay their respects.

eyes were bloodshot-another sleepless night, obvious at a glance.

Their eyes

Ursula didn’t attend. An old woman burying her own son was too cruel-she stayed in her hospital bed, drowning in tears.

Thea came early, worried the boys wouldn’t be able to manage everything on their own, and handled the arrangements.

Her face was pale and drawn. She clearly couldn’t accept that her brother had died without warning.

What made it worse was this: the killer still hadn’t been found. Not a single clue. Nothing.

Miguel and Maxwell stood beside Marcelo in black mourning attire, silent, nodding mechanically at each person who approached.

The atmosphere was heavy and formal.

Most guests wore grim expressions, offering quiet comfort to the brothers-words full of regret over Raymond’s sudden passing and sympathy for what the family had suffered.

Then, a small ripple of commotion rose near the entrance.

Marcelo looked up-and saw Gianna and Regina walk in together.

That woman-the one who used to play the sweet, obedient adopted daughter, all soft like some harmless little bunny-actually had the nerve to show up.

She wore plain black, her face arranged into the perfect amount of grief.

Fire flared in Maxwell’s eyes. He lunged forward-only for Marcelo to grab him hard.

“Maxwell,” Marcelo said, voice low and icy. “Do you know where you are? Don’t embarrass yourself here.”

Maxwell’s chest heaved. He pointed at them, shaking with rage. “Marcelo! They still have the face to come here?”

Regina eher didn’t hear them or deliberately ignored Maxwell’s gaze that looked ready to sp flames.

With Gianna beside her, she walked to Raymond’s portrait and bowed three times. slow and respectful. Then, she turned to Marcelo, her voice catching.

“Marcelo, my condolences. Your father… he was a good man. Gianna and I came to see him o one last time”
