She didn’t answer right away; she just kept staring at the ring with her jaw clenched in that way I’d never seen it before. For someone like Melissa to look so worried, when she was usually calm and smiling, made my blood run cold.

“Melissa,” I said.

She finally looked at me. “I’m worried about Gideon.”

I snapped my head toward her. “Why.”

She hesitated, then lowered her voice. “When Sebastian took over Evergreen from the last Alpha, the fight was… bad.”

“Bad how?”

“The old Alpha was in his seventies. He had arthritis. Bad knees. He could barely shift anymore.” Melissa looked back at the ring. “It should have been a quick fight. Clean. Sebastian was younger, stronger. He could have ended it in minutes without seriously hurting him. But he dragged it out. Beat him to a bloody pulp in front of the entire pack. Broke his ribs. His jaw. Kept going even after the old man couldn’t fight back anymore.”

I froze. She swallowed. “Colt had to step in and pull him off,” she finished quietly. “Otherwise, I think he would have killed him.”

I stared at Melissa, certain I had misheard all of that. Sebastian? The kind, gentle but firm Alpha who had taken care of me and Bjorn for months? I’d heard about his last victory, of course; but I never even imagined it could be that bad.

Pulling my brows together, I looked at Sebastian. He was circling Gideon again. That look in his eyes hadn’t faded. He looked furious and hungry. Like a predator on the prowl.

“He’s not going to stop,” Melissa said quietly. “Not until Gideon can’t get back up.”

I swallowed hard.

In the ring, Gideon lunged. Sebastian sidestepped and caught him with a knee to the stomach. Gideon doubled over, gasping. Sebastian grabbed him by the hair and drove his fist into Gideon’s face.

Gideon went down hard.

The crowd erupted.

I pulled my hand free from Claire’s and stepped forward. “Stop!”

No one heard me. Or if they did, they didn’t care. The noise was deafening.
