Avery’s POV
Gideon and Sebastian collided in the center of the ring in a tangle of fists and claws. The sound of flesh hitting flesh echoed through the courtyard, punctuated by grunts and snarls that made me flinch each time.
The two Alphas moved as a blur across the ring, wolves surging forward, claws extending from bare feet and scraping against the dirt. Gideon skidded backwards from a shove from Sebastian, his back claws catching him before he slid too far.
“Can they do that?” Claire whispered, leaning in and nodding toward Sebastian’s feet. “How did they even…”
“Their wolves are allowed to come to the surface in this fight, so long as neither Alpha shifts fully,” Colt, who had rejoined us, replied. “It was discussed and agreed upon beforehand.”
Claire glanced up at the Beta. “That seems dangerous, don’t you think?”
“They’re werewolves,” I said. “It’s dangerous either way.”
Claire snapped her lips shut, then gasped, clapping her hand over her mouth, just as Sebastian landed a punch to Gideon’s ribs with a slam that echoed through the courtyard. A ripple of murmurs arose from the crowd as Gideon twisted and drove his elbow into Sebastian’s jaw.
Sebastian stumbled back, then surged forward again, catching Gideon with an uppercut that snapped his head back. His front claws erupted, grazing the skin.
Blood sprayed from Gideon’s nose. I looked away, biting my lower lip.
The crowd roared. The men clashed again.
