The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 481

I sat, and the waiter appeared almost immediately, asking if I wanted anything. I ordered water. The shareholders already had drinks in front of them, half-finished glasses of whiskey and scotch. All on my bill, of course.

“So,” the first man said, leaning back in his chair. “Let’s cut to the chase. We’ve been hearing some troubling things about your whereabouts over the past few months.”

“I’ve been working remotely,” I said. “My son was sick and I wanted to provide him with fresh air.”

“There’s plenty of fresh air in the human lands,” one man pointed out.

My jaw clenched.

“We are sorry to hear about your son,” the third man cut in. He was older than the other two, with gray hair and a sharp gaze that always made me uncomfortable. “But we put our money into this company because we believed in your vision of a holistic medicine business built on human principles, for human customers. But if your loyalties are shifting elsewhere, that puts us in a very uncomfortable position, don’t you think?”

“My loyalties haven’t shifted. I’m still committed to the company. To the mission.”

“Seems to us that it’s quite the opposite,” the first man said.

Heat flared in my chest. I wanted to remind them that a sick child was at play here, and that they were all being very obtuse, but I kept it to myself.

“We’re currently producing a new, state-of-the-art medicine due to my time in the packs,” I said instead. “The trip hasn’t been fruitless.”

“But it’s medicine for werewolves. Not for humans.”

I opened my mouth, but before I could speak, one of the other men said, “Your loyalties appear to be divided, Avery. Perhaps where you come from, where everyone is warring amongst themselves like barbarians, it’s normal. But it’s not the sort of thing we take lightly around here.”

My wolf bristled at the disrespect. Thankfully, at that moment, the waiter returned with my water. I thanked him and took a sip, trying to calm myself with the cool liquid.

“Okay. So what do you want from me?” I asked, setting my glass down very carefully.
