Sebastian’s POV
The tea set gently clinked against the tray in my hands. Chamomile and peppermint steamed fragrantly up from two small cups, and between them sat a plate with a sandwich cut into two. Ham and cheese. I was pretty sure it was Avery’s favorite, although to be honest, I had never asked. But who didn’t like ham and cheese?
I was halfway down the hall, hoping to give it to her alone, when I heard Bjorn’s door open, and a shadow that was too large and broad to belong to Avery stepped out.
I stopped and stepped back, pressing myself against the wall. I wasn’t sure why I did it. Maybe because I knew that if Gideon thought I was about to get close to Avery, he would plant himself right in the way. Just like he always did.
Through the gap between the wall and the doorframe, I watched him step into the hallway. He stopped just outside the door and stood there for a moment, staring down at his hand.
Slowly, he unclenched his fist and looked at something in his palm.
I couldn’t see what he was looking at from this angle, but whatever it was made his shoulders tense. He stood there for another few seconds before his fingers curled back around it and he turned, walking down the hall toward the stairs.
I waited until he was out of sight before I set the tray down on a nearby table and followed.
He didn’t notice me. He was too focused on whatever he had clutched in his hand, his footsteps heavy as he descended the stairs and headed for the side door. I kept my distance, staying far enough back that he wouldn’t hear me but close enough that I could still see him.
When he stepped outside, I moved to the window.
Gideon crossed the driveway to his car and climbed inside. He sat there for a moment with the engine off, then reached into the glove compartment and pulled out what looked like a tissue. He unfolded it, placed something inside, and folded it back up. Then he tucked the tissue into the glove compartment and started the car.
