Chapter 292
Avery’s POV
The chaos eventually drew to a close. But with the way my heart was pounding, blood rushing in my ears, I hardly noticed at all.
I paced my tent, wringing my hands as the camp went quiet. My mind raced.
–
Had Gideon come for me after all? That letter he sent was it a decoy? A distraction to keep Asher from acting before I was rescued?
Or was it something else?
I hardly dared to hope that help had come, but my heart wandered anyway. I kept looking at the door, imagining that Gideon or someone, anyone-might come walking through that tent flap. That the wolf shadow standing sentry would eventually be met with a violent and brutal end and that my rescuer would come for
But that never happened.
Eventually, as the camp stopped echoing with the sounds of battle and the alarm stopped blaring, I began to lose hope.
Nothing happened for a long time.
Eventually, I saw a figure approaching through the canvas. I shot to my feet, but when the flap opened, it was Asher who stepped in. His face was pale and grim.
“Come with me,” he said coldly.
I twisted the ring on my finger. “Why?”.
“Just come.”
I knew I had no choice but to obey, so I followed him out of the tent. The camp was the same as before, although it was quieter now. Heads turned as I passed. I smelled blood in the air, and the lingering scent of someone familiar,
My heart stopped in my chest.
Gideon?
I surreptitiously slipped my ring off and tried to reach out for the mindink we shared, but I sensed nothing. Strange. If his scent was here, then I should have been able to communicate with him. This was bad.

The moment Asher opened his tent flap, I rushed inside. I felt my knees nearly buckle beneath me, but somehow, I managed to stay upright.
It was Gideon.
Asher had him tied to a chair in the center of his tent, bound by chains made of silver. The same ones that kept the slaves from shifting. His head was lolling forward onto his chest, and he didn’t stir as approached.
He came for me.
And now he was Asher’s latest prisoner.
“Recognize him?” Asher asked. He walked over and grabbed Gideon’s hair, lifting his head. Gideon groaned, and a large, angry purple bruise on his temple shone in the dim light.
