The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 291

Chapter 291

Hopefully, we wouldn’t have to give one. As much as I wanted revenge, today’s goal was simply to rescue Avery. Razing this fucking place to the ground would come later, once we had enough resources.

“Stay close,” I muttered once we were all ready. “And keep your heads down.”

We approached the camp slowly, blending in with the crowd of rogues returning from their patrols. The guards barely glanced at us as we passed through the gate. My heart pounded, but I kept my expression neutral and my gait casual.

Once inside, I split off from the group, heading in the direction of the cages. I didn’t pick up her scent. To my relief, she wasn’t in any of the cages. I didn’t recognize any of the slaves.

One girl looked at me for a moment too long. But I quickly turned away, whistling, and continued moving. She didn’t call out to me or follow, and I assumed that she didn’t pay me any mind.

After scanning the camp some more, I finally spotted what had to be Asher’s tent. It was large and positioned at the center of the camp. I approached, keeping my head down, and sniffed the air.

No scent.

Strange. If Asher took Avery as his personal prisoner, then I would have expected her to be in his quarters.

It was risky, but I had to check anyway. I had to know if she was there.

I spotted a guard walking out of the tent and took my chance. I slipped inside, keeping to the shadows.

The tent was empty. There was only an old woman stirring a pot over a fire, and she didn’t look up at me as I entered. There was a makeshift throne with a wolf’s pelt- making my own wolf snarl inwardly-and a separate area for a bedroom.

Keeping silent on my feet, I moved toward the bedroom. There, I spotted movement inside. I pressed myself to the canvas of the perimeter of the tent and peered closer.

There he was. The Rogue King,

He was moving around his bedroom, seemingly getting dressed. His back was turned to me, but I could see a sliver of his face in the mirror he was looking into. His eyepatch was missing, revealing a jagged, ugly gouge where his eyeball had been.

He froze.

Then turned abruptly.

My breath caught. I quickly turned, hurrying toward the door, but it was too late. “Hey!” Asher shouted. “Get back here! Intruder!”

I ran to the door now, but I didn’t get too far. The old woman suddenly picked up the pot she’d been stirring and flung it at me. Hot soup sprayed across me, burning my skin. I hissed and darted out of the tent, but the attack had slowed me down.

“Tegan,” I mindlinked my Beta, “pull back-”

An alarm blared before I could finish.

The sound was deafening, echoing through the camp. Rogues started shouting, and I heard the thunder of footsteps as they mobilized. My blood ran cold.

I raced toward the nearest gate. Rogues were shifting and snarling now. I skidded around a corner just in time to see one of my men go down, his throat ripped out by a massive gray wolf. Another was tackled by three rogues at once. I heard only screams.

“Fall back!” I shouted. I shifted mid-stride. My claws dug into the dirt as I lunged at the nearest rogue, tearing into his flank. He yelped and fell, and I didn’t wait to see if he got back up.

We fought our way toward the gate, but more rogues kept coming. They poured out of the tents like ants, surrounding us. I heard Tegan shout something, but his voice was drowned out by the snarls and screams, and then I lost him completely.

One of my warriors fell. Then another. Then another.

We were outnumbered. We had no choice but to fall back.

I spun, snapping at a rogue who got too close. My teeth found his leg, and I wrenched it to the side, hearing the bone crack. He howled and collapsed. But two more took his place. I turned toward the gate, ready to make a run for it, when suddenly, a scent washed over me.

Avery.

It cut through the smoke and blood like a lifeline. I froze, panting. She was close, Somewhere in this camp. I couldn’t leave without her. Not if she was here, afraid and alone.

I whirled around, searching. My wolf’s eyes scanned the crowd, looking for any sign
