The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 273

Chapter 273

He just turned on his heel and left, still holding his bloody wrist.

It was only once he was gone that I let out a shaky breath and pressed my hand to my racing heart.

Deirdre’s POV

A lowly slave.

That was what I had become.

Once, I was the Rogue King’s right-hand woman. Then, I was Gideon’s Luna. I didn’t think it was possible for me to rise any higher in the ranks.

But now… I was a lowly fucking servant, being forced to carry trays of food the bitch wouldn’t eat, dump her chamber pot, make her bed. The worst part was that I couldn’t even do anything about it because Asher had gotten it into his head that she was some kind of princess and not just a broodmare to help him produce his heirs.

I grit my teeth as I raked her shirt over the washboard. The water in the tub was ice- cold, turning the tips of my fingers red.

“Did you hear?” one of the other slaves whispered. “An Alpha’s scent was picked up by the hunters today. I wonder if he came for her!”

I froze. Were they talking about Gideon? Had he tracked Avery down?

“It’s honestly kind of romantic,” another slave replied in a hushed voice. “I wish my Prince Charming would come for me.”

Prince Charming.

Gideon was supposed to be my knight in shining armor, If Avery hadn’t ruined everything… But maybe this was an opportunity to fix things. If he was close, then I could find him. I knew these woods better than most.

Besides, how could I stay here like this? As a slave? I was better than this, I deserved the life I briefly had with Gideon, not the one that entailed scrubbing dirty clothes in wash buckets. 1

I stood, drying my hands on my wet apron. No one paid me any mind as I walked away from

my work. That was the one good thing about being a slave: no one notices you most of the time. I managed to make it all the way to the gates of the camp

before a guard spotted me.

“Where do you think you’re going, slave?” He glanced at the heavy silver chains binding my ankles together, keeping me from running and shifting.

I smiled and held up the basket I’d picked up along the way. “Collecting herbs for the princess’s abortion.”

The guard stared at me for a moment. My heart raced, but I kept my expression neutral. Finally, he nodded and let me pass.

I kept my pace steady along the forest path until I knew I was out of sight. Then, I began to run. As much as I could, at least, but it wasn’t easy with the chains. I could have found a key to unlock them before I left, but I needed them if I was going to make Gideon pity me.

I’d need to rough myself up, too, I realized. I dropped to the ground and rolled back and forth, dirtying my clothes and hair. Then, I ripped my skirt, and punched and bit myself a few times, just hard enough to leave marks and bruises.

By the time I picked up his scent, the sun was setting. I hurried in the direction I’d smelled it coming from, and eventually, it mingled with the faint scent of campfire smoke.

I tiptoed through the underbrush and peered around a large tree. There, I spotted him-sitting beside a modest campfire, staring at the stars.

So he really was looking for her.

But not for long. I’d make sure of that.

“Gideon!” I cried, bursting out of the trees. He shot to his feet, claws extending, half -shifting as if preparing for a fight. But there was no need. I threw myself before him and kissed the ground by his boots. “Gideon thank the Goddess you’re here!”
