Chapter 234
Avery’s POV
My small victory lasted all of 8 hours. Then Gideon once more began to dog my steps. I supposed he’d had time to rest and shower, and then immediately came to find me.
“What are you doing?” I asked as he knelt beside me in the dirt of the garden and began yanking up the weeds I was pulling.
His eyes slid over in my direction, “This is important to you, yes?”
“Yes?” I said with irritation.
“Then I will help you with it,” he said simply.
I glared at him. Was this some sort of new game? To shadow me at all times?
“You don’t even know what you’re doing,” I snapped, “That’s not a weed, that’s a carrot you just pulled up!”
“Then teach me,” Gideon said simply, “If it’s important to you, I want to know it.”
“No.”
“No?”
“No! I don’t know what you’re up to, but knock it off,” I huffed and rose from my knees. If he wanted to learn what I did all day, he was about to learn how to rotate compost and dole out fertilizer. The stinky fish fertilizer smelled terrible, and Gideon’s face scrunched up as I carefully poured it into my watering
can.
“You’re welcome to leave at any time,” I told him snootily.
“I want to be near you. You are my mate,” Gideon said with a smirk and took the watering can from me.
“So you’re going to abandon your Alpha duties and spend your time following me around?” I asked, exasperated.
“Yes,” he grinned at me, undeterred. He marched off towards the tomatoes and I stared after him with a crease between my eyebrows. Unsufferable man
His broad muscles rippled as he lifted the heavy can and dumped it all over the leaves.
“Hey! Not there!” I shouted, “It goes down under the leaves, the roots! Argh!” I stomped after him to show him how to do it.
Begrudgingly, I had to admit after several hours of garden work were cleared out in record time, that having a big strapping Alpha around wasn’t so bad.
‘You like looking at him, too,’ my wolf added knowingly.

‘Shut up,’ I tore my eyes away from where I had been watching Gideon bend over to mend a fence rail.
“What now?” Gideon asked, finishing the last of the tasks on my list for the day.
“Now you go away,” I said, though I was too tired to put much strength in it.
“No,” he said with that same implacable face, “I’m not leaving you.” (1)
“What is this?” I lost my temper, wiping my muddy hands on my shirt, “When will you leave me alone?”
“When you accept me as your mate,” Gideon said seriously, tilting his head towards me in the slanting sunlight. His eyes glittered as he looked me over. He reached out to wipe away a streak of mud that was stuck to my cheek, “Until then, you’re stuck with me.”
He had a leaf stuck in his hair, and I reached up to snatch it away, then stuck my hands back in my pockets as though touching him had burned me. Through our bond I could feel his amusement.
And his desire.
“You want me,” Gideon said in a low voice, “I can feel it, Avery.”
I wrenched my eyes away from a pile of hay I had been staring at and blushed. No, I absolutely had not been imagining Gideon and I tumbling into the golden straw and setting it afire with our desire…
In the back of my mind, my wolf laughed at me.
I closed my eyes and breathed deep.
