“Stop it,” Victoria snapped at Frank. “That’s bullshit. Lilly would never leave my brother. Sure, Hanna has been around him these last three years, but Lilly’s the one who took care of me. When I lost my mom and my brother, it was Lilly who gave me a home. She brought me to the Capital, took me to school, picked me up after class. For three years, she spent almost all her time with me. And her parents treated me so well, too. So Lilly isn’t just my big sister, she’s my sister-in-law. I love her and respect her, and I won’t let anyone talk badly about her.”
Frank went quiet. There was no denying how much Lilly had done for Victoria. Without Lilly, Victoria wouldn’t be who she was now.
Jason rested his hand gently on Victoria’s shoulder. “Victoria, you’ve got it all wrong. Hanna and I are just friends.”
“Really?” Victoria looked at him, searching his face. “You don’t like her?”
Jason didn’t hesitate. “I only see Hanna as a friend. I don’t have romantic feelings for her.”
Hanna’s hands clenched tightly at her sides. She already knew Jason didn’t feel the same. In all these years, he’d never given her any hope. Still, she couldn’t help how she felt about him. She was in too deep.
Victoria frowned. “If you don’t like Hanna, then why did you hurt Lilly?”
Something dark flickered in Jason’s eyes. It wasn’t him who hurt Lilly. It was the other way around.
“Victoria, I know how much you care about Lilly, but she doesn’t love me anymore. She can’t be your sister-in-law.”
“Who says she doesn’t love you? She came to see you today.”
Jason turned to his assistant. “Where’s my phone?”
The assistant immediately handed it over. “Here, sir, your phone.”
Jason looked at the screen and saw Lilly had called him. He remembered now. He’d been in a meeting and didn’t have his phone on him, so he’d missed her call.
The assistant spoke up, “Sir, I heard the Lynch family is having some trouble. I’m guessing Lilly came to ask for your help.”
Victoria’s voice was urgent. “When our family was in trouble, Lilly and her dad never turned their backs on us. Have you forgotten how much they helped us when we needed it most? Now that Lilly needs you, how can you not be there for her?”
