David didn’t even look back as he left.
Jessa gave Ella a quick wave. “See you, Ella. I’m heading out.” She hurried after him. “David, wait up!”
Louise turned to Moss. “I should go too.” Then she followed the others outside.
Lola watched them disappear, then tugged at Ella’s sleeve. “Mommy, why did Daddy leave with that mean lady? I don’t like her. She was mean to you.”
Ella glanced at the spot where David and Jessa had gone, then knelt beside her daughter and smiled. “Sweetie, things between grownups can get really complicated. The only thing you need to remember is that Mommy and Daddy both love you so much, and we’ll always be here for you.”
Lola’s face lit up and she nodded. “Okay.”
Joanna moved closer, worry in her eyes. “Ella, are you really alright?”
Ella gave her a small shake of her head. “I’m fine, really.”
Lilly scowled. “Jessa is honestly the worst. She keeps talking about having a son for David. Like that’s even going to happen. She wishes.”
Just then, Ella’s expression changed. Her brows knitted together and she bent over, covering her mouth as a wave of nausea hit. She hadn’t eaten much today, so there wasn’t anything to throw up, but the sick feeling was strong.
Moss and Joanna rushed to her side. “Ella, are you okay? Are you feeling sick?”
Mrs. Harmon stepped forward with a worried look. “Ella, did you eat something bad?”
Ella pressed her fingers to her wrist to check her pulse, her eyelashes trembling as realization washed over her.
Lilly couldn’t hold back. “Ella, what’s going on? Tell us.”
Ella took a slow breath and looked up. “I’m pregnant.”
