Ella smiled. “I never left.”
“Will you, though? Every time you’re out of sight, I start worrying you’ll take Lola and disappear again.”
She didn’t answer at first.
David’s voice was soft but desperate. “I know you want to keep your distance, to protect me from the pain of Heart Connect. But Ella, as hard as that is, I’m even more afraid of losing you and Lola. Whatever happens, we’ll face it together. Please, don’t shut me out. Don’t leave again. Three years have already passed. I can’t go through losing you and Lola for another three years, or ever again.”
As he poured out his heart, Ella lifted her hand and pressed her palm to the door between them. She wanted to see him, wanted to close the gap, but for his health, this was all they had. Just words through wood.
A gentle smile played on her lips. “David, I promise. I’m not going anywhere.”
It didn’t matter what obstacles came their way. As long as they stood side by side, nothing could keep them apart.
David smiled, relief and joy written all over his face. “Ella, I’ve been waiting so long to hear you say that.”
Out in the hallway, Moss and Joanna watched the two with fond smiles, feeling reassured by their resolve. Moss stepped closer, his voice warm. “David, we’re all in this together. Ella’s our stepdaughter now, and we’re here for both of you. Don’t worry. You’re not alone.”
David blinked, surprised. He hadn’t realized Moss and Joanna had made Ella their stepdaughter. “Wait, what?”
Joanna grinned. “We adore Ella. We took her in as our stepdaughter, and we’re throwing a huge party to make it official. From now on, we’ll love her like our own.”
David’s smile widened. He knew Moss and Joanna would be wonderful parents to her. The thought that even more people loved Ella made him truly happy.
Moss clapped him on the shoulder. “Funny how things work out. After all this, you’re still my son-in-law, and I’m still your father-in-law.”
Then Moss seemed to remember something and turned to David with a teasing look. “But if I recall, you once said you’d never marry any girl from the Wade family...”
“No!” David cut in, flustered, realizing he’d just walked into his own trap. “Dad. Mom.”
