Lola was still just a kid. She had no idea how messy things could get between adults, and Mrs. Harmon wasn’t about to talk about any of it in front of her.
“Lola, your daddy need to get some rest. Come on, let’s go home now.”
Lola leaned in and kissed David on the cheek. “Okay, Daddy, I’m leaving. Make sure you have plenty of rest, alright?”
David hugged her one more time. “I’ll miss you, Lola.”
Mrs. Harmon took Lola’s hand and led her out. The room felt a little emptier after they left, just David and Jessa now.
Jessa slid into the chair beside his bed. “David, I’m really happy you wanted me to stay.”
It felt like a great beginning.
David watched her and smiled softly. “I don’t know why, but having you here actually makes me feel calm.”
Jessa’s eyes sparkled. “That’s because you love me, David. There’s still a spot for me in your heart, even if you don’t want to admit it. Ella was just messing with your head.”
His tone was unreadable. “You think so?”
Jessa nodded with certainty. “I know so.”
“Then stay,” David said. “I want you here with me.”
Jessa’s heart fluttered. She finally got to be close to him again.
Just then, Aiden burst in, a little out of breath. “Sir, are you alright?”
David glanced at Jessa. “Could you get me some water?”
Jessa grinned. “Of course.”
She left, practically floating out of the room.
Aiden turned to David, his voice low. “Sir, why did you let Miss Wade stay? If Ms. Irvine finds out, she’ll be furious.”
David knew Ella was already upset. Still, he couldn’t go to her right now, not with the way he was feeling. He didn’t want to pull Ella into any more trouble. First, he needed to figure out what was happening to him.
