David turned around and headed straight back to his hospital room.
Jessa hurried after him. “David, aren’t you going to catch up with Ella?”
He wanted to. Just not right now. Something felt off in his body and he needed to figure out what was going on before anything else.
Back in the room, David pressed the call button for the doctor.
The doctor came in and stood by the bed, all polite and proper. “Mr. Harmon?”
David looked at him, frustration in his eyes. “What’s going on with me? I keep getting these brutal headaches. It feels like my head might just explode.”
“Mr. Harmon, we’ve run every test. All your results came back perfectly normal. There’s nothing wrong with your body.”
Nothing wrong? Then why did his head feel like it was splitting open?
The doctor handed over a folder. “Here, take a look. This is your brain CT scan. Everything looks great.”
That only made David more confused. He was in pain, but the tests said he was fine. What was he supposed to believe?
Jessa spoke gently. “David, maybe you’re just exhausted. You should rest. I’ll stay here with you.”
He glanced at her. “You?”
Jessa nodded eagerly. “Of course. That Ella girl is just bad luck for you. Every time you try to go to her, you get a headache and pass out. But I’m your good luck charm. As long as I’m here, everything will be alright.”
David thought it over. It was strange. Whenever he thought about Ella, or tried to get close, the pain would hit him hard. But every time Jessa showed up, the pain faded away.
