Louise felt her heart drop. She stared at Moss, her voice barely above a whisper. “Moss, do you really want me to leave?”
Moss’s face stayed calm, almost cold. “Louise, you’ve been living with the Wade family for years. At first, I didn’t think it was a problem, but Joanna really minds. We’ve been apart for so long and I’m tired of fighting with her about this. I thought it over. The best thing is for you to move out.”
Louise couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “So you’re just sending me away for Joanna? After everything, she’s still the only one you care about, isn’t she?”
“Louise, Joanna is my wife. Of course she’s the only one in my heart.”
It felt like someone dumped ice water over her. First, being told to leave hurt enough, but hearing him say it so plainly, that Joanna was the only one he cared about, cut even deeper. She barely recognized the man standing in front of her anymore.
Jessa panicked. She and Louise were in this together now, and she couldn’t let Louise get thrown under the bus. “Dad, are you really doing this? You can’t just kick Louise out. She—”
Before she could finish, a crisp, clear voice sliced through the air. “Jessa, I think you’ve got it all wrong. Mr. Wade isn’t making Louise leave. Louise said herself she wanted to go.”
Jessa looked up and saw Ella walking in, all confidence and grace, like she owned the place. Of course it was Ella. Whenever she showed up, things always got more complicated.
Ella glanced at Jessa and Louise, a sly smile on her lips. “Louise, weren’t you just saying how you wanted to leave? What’s going on? Changed your mind? Decided to stay after all?”
Louise tried to speak up. “I—”
