She could feel Mrs. Harmon’s affection for Ella growing stronger by the second.
Jessa was livid. Her face twisted with anger as she hissed, “What’s wrong with all of you? You can’t even handle one little brat?”
The men in black moved quickly toward Lola.
Terrified, Lola screamed, “Don’t touch me! Grandma, help!”
Mrs. Harmon stepped in front of Lola, shielding her with her own body. She glared at Jessa. “Who are you? You know me, don’t you?”
Jessa froze.
Mrs. Harmon looked her up and down, suspicion in her eyes. “You asked about my legs. The only way you’d know about my wheelchair is if we’d met before. You’re someone I know, aren’t you? And with that body… you look like a woman.”
Mrs. Harmon had been the head of the Harmon family for years. She was sharp, always seeing through people’s lies. Her eyes studied Jessa closely, and for the first time, Jessa felt a wave of panic. If Mrs. Harmon figured her out now, it was all over. She might as well go all in.
“If she wants to protect the bastard girl so badly, then fine. Let’s send them off together.”
The two men nodded. “Yes, ma’am.”
Jessa glared at Mrs. Harmon and Lola, her voice icy. “You want to know who I am? You’ll find out soon enough.”
She turned to leave, a mocking laugh slipping out.
Suddenly, Mrs. Harmon yelled, “Wait!”
Jessa stopped, turning back just as Mrs. Harmon shoved one of the men aside and rushed at her. In a flash, she tore the mask from Jessa’s face.
