He led her out, but as soon as they were in the hallway, Ella pulled her hand away. “David, you should go back. I’m fine here at the Wade estate. I want to stay for a few days.”

David looked at her, eyebrows raised. “You’re staying here? You’re not even related to Uncle Moss. Why would you want to stay in his house?”

He’d already noticed how Moss treated Ella differently. Normally, no one else was allowed in Morgan’s study, but somehow, Ella was there. Moss was clearly willing to bend the rules for her.

“Mr. Harmon, Mr. Wade is a good man,” Ella said quietly. “You don’t have to worry about him.”

“Oh, he’s a good man? Ella, I think you’re showing some favoritism here.”

Ella didn’t answer. She wasn’t sure what it was about Morgan, but she felt a strange sense of closeness to him, almost like family. It was a feeling that ran deep, something she couldn’t really explain.

“Mr. Harmon, I came here to help Lola and your mom.”

“And how exactly are you planning to do that?”

“Jessa’s under house arrest right now. I don’t think she’ll hold out much longer. Sooner or later, she’s going to make a mistake.”

David sighed. “Ella, why are you doing this all by yourself? You came to the Wade estate without even telling me.”

Ella looked right into his eyes. “You and Jessa are engaged. I don’t want to drag myself or Lola into whatever arrangement exists between the Harmons and the Wades. I hope you understand what I’m trying to say.”

David nodded. “I get it. But Ella, I’m not going to marry Jessa. As soon as Lola and my mother are safe, I’ll call off the engagement. It was set up when we were kids. I have no intention of marrying Ms. Wade.”

“Are you really sure you won’t marry her?”

David lifted his hand as if to swear. “I promise, if I ever marry Ms. Wade, I’ll—”

Ella quickly reached out and lowered his hand, stopping him. “Don’t make promises you can’t take back. What if you actually want to marry Ms. Wade one day?”
