Jessa just stared, too furious to even speak. Ella’s words sounded sweet, but there was something about them that made Jessa want to scream.
Moss turned to her. “Jessa, what is it?”
What could she even say? If she kept pushing, her dad would start to get suspicious.
So Jessa forced herself to answer. “I made plans with Sarah to go out dancing. I just want to have some fun tonight.”
Moss’s face hardened. “No way. It’s too late. You’re not going anywhere. Go back to your room and get some rest.”
“Dad, I…”
He cut her off. “Your mother will be back to see you in a couple of days.”
Jessa froze. Did she hear that right?
“My mom is coming back? But… isn’t she dead?” Her voice shook.
Moss shook his head. “She’s not dead. She’s coming to see you.”
Jessa felt her whole world flip upside down.
All these years, she’d believed Joanna was gone forever. Now, suddenly, her mom was alive and coming back. Would everything she’d tried to hide come out?
Ella was Joanna’s daughter by blood. The connection between mother and daughter was strong, stronger than anything Jessa had ever felt with Moss. And now Ella was living here, in the Wade house. Was her secret about to unravel?
Ella watched her, studying her face. “Ms. Wade, your mom is coming back. Why don’t you look even a little happy?”
Jessa’s mind spun, but all she could feel was how much she hated Ella. She hated her so much.
“I was dumped at Rockford Bay when I was a kid,” Jessa shot back. “I blame my dad, and I blame my mom too.”
She didn’t wait for a response. She just turned and walked inside, leaving the conversation behind.
Ella’s lips curled into a small, knowing smile. Jessa wasn’t stupid. She knew exactly how to tug at Moss’s guilt. With just a few words, she’d make him feel even worse, and probably dote on her even more to make up for it.
