“Thank you… for saving me,” Lilly called softly.

The man didn’t look back, just kept walking, leaving her with nothing but his cold, distant silhouette.

Ella was already on the phone with the police. She hurried over. “Lilly, who was that guy?”

Lilly shook her head. “I really don’t know.”

Lola looked up at Lilly, her eyes wide. “I’m really glad you’re okay, Lilly.”

Lilly reached down and gently ruffled Lola’s hair.

Ella’s tone turned businesslike. “The police will handle this. I’m going to make sure those two spill who sent them. Let’s go home for now.”

She started to lead Lilly away, but Lilly hesitated. “Ella, I have something I need to do. I’ll go ahead.”

Ella caught her by the arm. “Where are you going? Are you trying to find that man?”

Lilly didn’t answer.
