Peter rushed at Rachel and clamped his hands around her neck. “Rachel, you’re pure poison!”
Rachel’s breath was snatched away so quickly that her face turned bright red, but somehow, she still managed to laugh. The sound was rough and wild. “I sent Ella away to the countryside when she was a kid. She’s been through things you can’t even imagine. You failed your duty.”
She glared at him, her chest heaving. “Jessa is the one who should be the heiress. My daughter is the real heiress, not Ella.”
Peter watched her with pure disgust. Right then, he really did want to kill her. “You ruined everything. You destroyed me. I’m gonna strangle you right now.”
His hands tightened. Rachel felt herself slipping closer and closer to the edge. She could see darkness creeping in, but she refused to give up.
Her hand flailed around until she grabbed an ashtray on the table. She swung it as hard as she could and smashed it into Peter’s head.
Blood spattered everywhere.
A bright red stream ran down Peter’s face. His hands went slack, and his body crumpled to the floor.
Peter was down.
Rachel clutched at her throat, gasping for air. Her whole body trembled with the shock of what just happened.
She stared at Peter, lying in a pool of blood. “Honey? Honey, wake up,” she called, her voice shaking.
He didn’t move.
Rachel’s voice softened, almost breaking as she whispered, “I really loved you, you know. But you betrayed me. Now Jessa is all I have, and I won’t let anyone stand in her way, not even you. You brought this on yourself.”
Suddenly, she heard footsteps in the hall. David and Ella were coming back.
Rachel froze. What was she supposed to do now?
Out in the hallway, David and Ella were hurrying up the stairs. Ella had just been forced to eat a bowl of chicken soup and was anxious to get back to making the antidote.
