Mrs. Harmon sat there, lost for words. She had prepared herself for a fight if Ella refused, had even thought about what she would do to force her hand. But this Ella, so calm and composed, left her completely thrown off.

“Ella, I hope you mean what you just said. The marriage between the Harmon family and the Wade family has to happen.” Mrs. Harmon paused, then continued quietly, “My husband has a son with another woman. That’s why, Ella. David has to marry Ms. Wade.”

David had a half-brother. No one ever talked about it, but Mrs. Harmon had just told her the truth.

Ella nodded. “I understand, Mrs. Harmon. I’ll get going now. Maybe we’ll meet again someday.”

She turned and walked out.

Her slim figure disappeared quickly from sight. Marian stepped closer and whispered, “Ma’am, I can’t believe how easy that was. Ms. Irvine isn’t anything like what we thought.”

Marian went on, “When I went with the others to Stellaris Apartments to bring her here, she was so calm. There’s something powerful about her, like she just shines, but quietly.”

Marian had been with Mrs. Harmon since her wedding, always by her side.

Mrs. Harmon stared after Ella. “She’s nothing like I expected.”

Just then, the door to the next room opened and a tall, serious man walked out.

Mrs. Harmon turned. “Mr. Wade.”

It was Moss.

He’d been there the whole time, listening to everything between Ella and Mrs. Harmon.

Moss glanced down the empty hallway. “She’s gone?”

Mrs. Harmon nodded. “Yeah.”

Moss shook his head. “Ella isn’t just any girl. David was right about her.”
