When David heard Ella’s name, his whole body tensed. “Mom,” he said quietly.
Mrs. Harmon’s voice was sharp and clear on the other end. “David, I’ve told you before. I can ignore the girls in your life, but you can’t let any of them get to your heart. Now Moss called me himself. He said you’re refusing to marry her daughter because of this Ella. Is that true?”
“It’s true,” David said, his tone open and steady. “I love Ella. I’m not going to marry anyone else.”
Mrs. Harmon’s anger was immediate. “You’re being ridiculous. I can’t believe you’re letting this Ella cloud your judgment. The marriage alliance between our family and the Wades must happen. Ms. Wade is back now, so get ready. You need to marry her as soon as possible.”
David pressed his brows together. “Mom…”
She cut him off. “I’ve already arranged a private jet. I’ll be in Rockford Bay tomorrow.”
Two cold beeps echoed through the phone, and then she was gone.
Mrs. Harmon was coming.
David stood outside for a moment, taking in a shaky breath, before sliding back into the car. He started the engine and glanced at Ella. “Let me take you home.”
Ella just nodded. “Okay.”
Lilly, sitting in the back, leaned forward. “What did Mrs. Harmon say on the phone just now?”
David’s eyes flicked up to the rearview mirror. As he met Ella’s gaze, her eyes were calm and clear, searching his face. He looked at her, then said, “My mom’s coming to Rockford Bay tomorrow.”
He didn’t bother to explain why.
Lilly’s eyes widened. “She is coming? She hasn’t left her house for years. She’s always in her wheelchair, keeps to herself, barely speaks to anyone. Why would she come here now?”
She looked at David, a little worried. “You’ve been in Rockford Bay for a while. Maybe it’s time you went back to the Capital.”
