Was the officer asking about Jace?
Had Jace just called him?
Lilly nodded. “Yeah, he left.”
The officer didn’t ask any more questions. “We’ll take Rainy Devil back with us. Tomorrow, we’ll need you to come by and give a statement.”
“Alright,” Lilly replied.
“It’s the rainy season, and a thunderstorm’s coming. It’s not safe to drive in this weather. There’s an inn just up ahead. You should all go, take a hot shower, and change into some dry clothes. Don’t catch a cold,” the officer said, his tone gentle but firm.
David, Ella, and Lilly were soaked through. The autumn air was chilly, and honestly, they didn’t have any better ideas. They followed the officer’s advice and made their way to the inn.
…
The inn was small but tidy. The guy at the front desk led them to a room and apologized. “Sorry, this is the only room left tonight.”
Three people in one room?
Ella peeked inside and saw there was just one bed. Not exactly ideal, but they couldn’t be picky.
David nodded. “It’s fine. We’ll take it.”
The front desk guy handed them a key card and left.
David stepped into the room, but before he could say anything, Ella darted out after the staff member. “Excuse me, wait a second.”
He paused. “Is there something else?”
David watched as Ella smiled, her face sweet and bright. “There are three of us. Do you think we could get an extra blanket?”
The guy looked at David. “Is he with you?”
