Lilly stared at Lucas, completely stunned. She couldn’t wrap her head around what he was saying. All this time, he’d only been with her because his family wanted him to be. The compliments, the engagement... none of it was real. To him, she wasn’t beautiful at all. She was just the ugly girl he had to tolerate.

So that was how he really felt.

Her face drained of color.

“Lilly, I don’t want Sarah to get hurt again. The one who should disappear is you, you ugly freak.”

Lucas spat out those words with so much hatred, then turned and walked away without looking back.

Lilly stumbled backward, tears already blurring her vision. She pressed her hand over her mouth, holding in a sob, then ran out of the dorm as fast as she could.

It was raining outside, heavy and cold, matching the storm inside her. She ran through the campus gates, barely noticing the water soaking through her clothes. She flagged down a taxi and climbed in.

The cruel words kept echoing in her mind. “Lilly, you’re so ugly. You’re just an ugly girl. You should be the one to disappear.”

Hot tears rolled down her cheeks, falling faster and harder until she couldn’t hold back the sound of her crying.

The driver looked at her in the rearview mirror. “Where to, miss?”

She choked out, “Scholar’s Road... the Lynch family home...”

She just wanted to go home now. She didn’t notice the driver’s cap pulled low over his eyes, or the twisted smile that flickered across his face as he watched her falling apart in the back seat.

Ella got back to Central College and immediately tried calling Lilly, but the call kept ringing without an answer.

A weird feeling crept up inside Ella as she walked past the dance studio. She glanced through the big windows and froze. Lucas was inside with Sarah. Sarah looked like she’d just been crying, her face blotchy and scared.

“Lucas, Lilly’s not going to send people to hurt me again, right? I’m so scared,” Sarah whimpered.

“Don’t worry, Sarah. I’m here. I’ll protect you,” Lucas said, pulling her into his arms.

Sarah buried her face in his chest. “Thank you.”
