The whole room was buzzing about the summit, and just like that, all eyes were off her.
Jessa could barely hide how jealous she felt. The so-called genius girl had stolen the spotlight, and it burned.
Suddenly, Sarah leaned in, her voice a little too loud. “Guys, look, Ella’s here.”
David held a glass of wine, swirling it around with zero interest. He’d seemed checked out all night, but at the sound of Ella’s name, he looked up, his eyes sharp for the first time.
He saw her.
Ella wore a sleeveless black dress that hugged her waist and flared out just enough to show off her long legs. The moment she walked in, people couldn’t help but stare.
Her long, dark hair fell softly over her shoulders, and a sweater was draped over one slim arm. From where David sat, he could only catch her profile. Her face seemed even smaller now, her skin glowing pale and clear she almost looked untouchable, like she didn’t quite belong in this world.
No one else in Rockford Bay had that kind of presence.
Jessa spotted Ella too, her eyes bright with something sharp.
She’d always seen the genius girl as her competition, someone to measure herself against, someone to envy. But Ella had always seemed beneath her notice. Now, looking at her, Jessa felt nothing but smug.
Jessa smiled, her tone light. “I heard Ella was really sick recently. I guess she’s better now.”
Sarah scoffed, rolling her eyes. “David’s wanted to dump her forever. Honestly, he did her a favor by waiting so long. Who gets sick over that?”
Cedric glanced at Ella, his face set. “Well, it’s done. David’s single. So, David, when are you and Jessa tying the knot?”
Their crowd of rich kids started teasing. “We can’t call her Miss Irvine anymore. She’s going to be Mrs. Harmon.”
Jessa looked as pleased as she felt, her smile practically glowing.
