Losing David hurt more than she ever imagined.
Honestly, she couldn’t even say what was so good about him. He hadn’t treated her well, not really. But who hasn’t fallen for a jerk in their life? She loved David, that was all there was to it.
Ella clutched the pendant he gave her, her fingers wrapped so tight around it her knuckles turned white. She knew he was gone. She’d lost him.
A Rolls-Royce Phantom was parked at the curb. Inside, David sat staring through the spotless windshield, watching Ella as she hugged her knees and broke down right there on the street, crying so hard she could barely breathe.
David’s eyes darkened, a hint of red creeping in at the edges. His knuckles went pale as he gripped the steering wheel. There was an ache in his chest, nothing sharp, just a dull, crawling pain that spread slowly and wouldn’t let go.
His phone rang.
Jessa’s name lit up the screen.
She sounded almost giddy. “David, did you and Ella get divorced?”
He kept his eyes on Ella, his voice rough. “Yeah. We did.”
“That’s great! Hurry back to the hospital. I need to see that divorce certificate to believe it.”
She hung up, sounding completely satisfied.
David took a breath, letting his eyes clear and the red fade away, replaced by that cold, distant calm. He and Ella were over. It was done.
From now on, they were strangers.
He told himself he loved Jessa. He needed to be good to her.
David pressed the gas, and the Phantom shot forward, speeding toward the hospital.
…
Ella dragged herself back to the dorm. Just as she pushed open the door, two loud pops went off. Lilly and Fiona showered her in confetti, laughing. “Ella, congrats! Did you just get back from another date with Mr. Harmon?”
She just walked in, not saying a word.
Their smiles faded fast. Something was off.
