“David, have you ever loved me?”
The question froze him for a second.
He had. He’d caught himself looking at Ella in a way he never looked at anyone else. He cared about her, felt drawn to her, wanted her in a way that was hard to ignore. There was something there, a spark, but it wasn’t enough. Not when he compared it to what he felt for Jessa.
Now that the divorce was happening, he just wanted to cut ties completely. No lingering feelings, no regrets.
“I love Jessa,” he said, voice steady.
He loved Jessa. He said it out loud.
Ella’s eyes lost their shine. She knew she shouldn’t have asked. It only made everything worse, made her feel even more humiliated. She’d taken her chances and lost.
“Let’s get divorced, then.”
David was quiet for a moment. “Go get your ID.”
Ella forced a small smile and tapped her bag. “I brought it with me.”
She’d grabbed it from the closet before she left. The second she saw his call, she knew what he wanted.
David glanced at her, started the car, and drove straight to the civil office.
…
Half an hour later, they sat in the waiting area, paperwork in their hands.
The clerk tried to talk them out of it. “Would you like to think it over before you make the decision?”
David didn’t even flinch. “There’s nothing to think about.”
The clerk sighed. “Alright. Please sign here.”
Ella sat there and watched David pick up the pen. His signature was quick and bold, like he couldn’t wait to be done.
