“I’ll make sure the doctors and nurses take good care of her. Nothing will happen to her, I promise.”
With that, Steven frowned and walked straight to the door without even glancing back.
Mr. Anderson’s face turned red with anger. “Even if something huge is going on, can’t you wait? At least stay until Lucie wakes up…”
But Steven acted like he hadn’t heard a word, hurrying out of the hospital.
Mr. Anderson grew even more furious. “You see that? Who treats their wife like this? What could possibly be so important that he’d just leave her in the hospital and run off? What kind of husband does that?”
Rose tried to calm him down. “Maybe it really is something urgent. Let’s not worry about him. Even if he’s gone, we’ll take good care of Miss Lucie.”
But Mr. Anderson just shook his head, still fuming. “No wonder Lucie wants a divorce. He’s just not reliable. I never liked him—not from the start when Lucie said she wanted to marry him. I don’t know what spell he put on her, but that silly girl just insisted on being with him.”
The more he talked, the angrier he got.
Four years ago, he’d handpicked several outstanding young men as suitors for his granddaughter, hoping to find someone who’d join their family.
But things got mixed up. When Lucie went to meet her date, she ended up confusing Steven for her actual match because the real one was late. Steven didn’t bother to clear things up, and just went along with it. And somehow, that’s how it all started.
Rose gently said, “Sir, please don’t get upset. Miss Lucie hasn’t woken up yet. We shouldn’t disturb her.”
Mr. Anderson let out a long sigh. “It’s just fate playing tricks. I had Lucie’s fortune told ages ago. The fortune teller said she’d have a troublesome love life. I thought I could help her change that, but it looks like it was impossible to avoid.
“Maybe it’s for the best anyway. Steven was never good enough for her.”
While they were still talking, Lucie slowly opened her eyes, her head still foggy. She coughed softly.
