Dane didn’t expect Claire to call. “My grandfather’s home. Come over, he’ll be really happy to see you.” He didn’t even bother checking with Baldrick. The decision was made.
“That’s a relief,” Claire replied. As soon as Dane hung up, he went to tell Baldrick. With the weather so snowy, Baldrick had no plans to go out anyway. Being cooped up at home, he was getting restless. Watching TV was about the only thing he could do, and he was bored out of his mind. Now that he was feeling a bit better, he wanted to get outside for a bit, but both Dane and Jack had put their foot down.
Meanwhile, Claire was getting ready to head out with Owen, but Owen got called away at the last minute and couldn’t make it. “Sorry, Claire, you’ll have to go by yourself. I’ll have the driver take you,” he said.
Claire just smiled. “No worries. Go do what you need to do.”
“I’ll go with you,” Padgett said, suddenly reappearing in the living room, all dressed and ready.
Claire was caught off guard. “You’re coming too?”
Padgett shrugged, half hiding his real reason. “Didn’t you say Baldrick’s doing better after seeing a doctor at Apex? I should pay him a visit.”
He was clearly set on joining Claire, and it was obvious he wanted to show her some support. Claire understood right away. She’d only just connected with the Churchill family and knew she wasn’t going to be everyone’s favorite overnight. More than anything, she figured Padgett felt he owed something to Melissa. With his daughter missing all these years, he was throwing all his fatherly affection at Claire, who’d suddenly walked into his life.
Claire didn’t say anything about it. The two of them headed off together to the Green family home.
With Padgett there, Claire felt like a well-behaved kid tagging along with an elder to visit an old friend. She let him handle everything, following his lead.
When Baldrick heard Padgett and Claire were on their way, he quickly realized Padgett was there just for Claire. Did Padgett really think he needed to protect her from Baldrick? Still, Baldrick shuffled toward the door to greet them.
Dane met him and gently blocked his way. “Grandpa, it’s freezing. Stay inside, I’ll go get them.”
Baldrick hesitated.
