Isaac was dozing off in the car when suddenly, he opened his eyes to find Joie sitting next to him instead.
Raising an eyebrow, he mumbled, "What are you doing here?"
Pointing to the blanket on his body, Joie replied, "I thought you might be cold, so I got you a blanket. Nathan's already snoozing."
Isaac checked the time on his phone. It was way past midnight. Brittany must've been in dreamland already.
He placed his phone on the small table in front of him, switched it to silent mode, and turned it off before drifting off into sleep again.
Joie was staring at Isaac's eyebrows, so perfect it was unreal. How did Brittany score such a catch? She leaned in, wanting to touch him, yet remembering Isaac's sensitivity to touch, she thought better of it. As much as it stung, she pulled her hand back.
Right then, the phone lit up.
Calls kept coming in, but Isaac was out cold, completely oblivious.
Everyone in the business cabin was asleep except her.
Joie picked up the phone, cautiously stood up, and pressed the answer button.
Suddenly, a loud crash came from the other end, followed by Brittany's scream!
Something's gone wrong!
This thought flashed across Joie's mind!
Without thinking, Joie ended the call, deleted all the call logs, put the phone back, and smirked slightly.
...
The sound of a bone breaking was followed by a man's groan.
William had used his body to shield her from a fatal blow, and now he lay on top of her, his forehead drenched in a cold sweat.
"William!"
Brittany frantically looked at William, who barely managed to open his eyes, "I'm okay."
The man, seeming to enjoy the spectacle, landed a few more brutal blows on William, nearly knocking him unconscious.
Summoning strength from nowhere, Brittany grabbed a rock from the ground and smashed it on the man's head.
"Bastard!"
The man collapsed immediately.
Brittany's tears fell like a broken string of pearls. All rational thought froze at that moment!
The wailing of police and ambulance sirens filled the air, quickly engulfing the scene.
Brittany clung to William, her hands dripping with blood.
The weather was bone-chillingly cold, and she felt no warmth.
Doctors rushed to the scene and took William away.
Brittany, covered in blood, was sent to the hospital while the police stayed back to investigate.
Brittany was practically in a daze, allowing others to guide her.
She was showing early signs of pregnancy, and her arm was badly scraped. But compared to William's condition, these were trifles.
Brittany stepped out of the exam room, her eyes red-rimmed, and headed towards the operating room.
Before she could reach, a slap landed on her face, "It's you again. My son was badly injured trying to save you before, and now this car accident. Why do you always bring danger to my son?"
Brittany fell to the ground, but it was as if she felt no pain, "Mrs. Dillion, I'm truly sorry."
