The next morning, Brittany woke up to find Isaac had already prepared breakfast.
She wrapped her arms around his waist, nuzzling against his back, "Zakky, let's go out for dinner tonight, shall we?"
To celebrate their win.
Isaac paused, "Bri, I got some stuff to deal with tonight. I might not be able to join you."
He hadn't figured out how to tell Brittany about the little girl yet. He planned to meet her first and then introduce her to Brittany when she was a bit better.
Brittany didn't think much of it, though a bit disappointed, "Then I'll go with Kari?"
"Sure, just be back early."
After breakfast, Isaac dropped Brittany off at the studio, then headed straight to the hospital following the address Nathan provided.
Nathan was already waiting at the hospital.
Upon Isaac's arrival, Nathan quickly approached, "Mr. Salter, according to the records, Ms. Joie is the little girl from back then. She's 24 years old and has congenital heart disease."
Isaac paused slightly. He vaguely remembered the little girl mentioning her health issues.
He opened the door to the ward, and the girl in bed looked over.
Recognizing Isaac, her eyes welled up, "Bro Isaac, is that you?"
Her calling him "Bro Isaac" erased all his doubts.
Stepping quickly forward and seeing the frail Joie, he wanted to hug her but thought it might not be appropriate. So he patted her shoulder instead, "How have you been these years?"
Joie held his hand tightly, her eyes becoming teary as she began to talk about her life.
Isaac knew she'd had a hard life from the records.
But hearing about it again, he still felt sad, patting Joie's back comfortingly, "It's okay. I’ll take care of you from now on. Just focus on getting better. Everything will be all right."
Joie looked at him. He was dressed understatedly but of high quality.
He even had a personal assistant, obviously not an average Joe.
There was a flash of defiance in her eyes, but mostly she tried to ingratiate herself, "Bro Isaac, will you always take care of me?"
Joie was naturally gentle looking and had smooth skin.
Feeling uneasy, Brittany called him three times in a row.
Finally, the call got through, his voice soft, "Bri, are you home?"
"Yes, I bought a small cake for you. When will you finish work? Are you busy?"
Isaac glanced at Joie, who was undergoing a comprehensive examination, and chose to hide the truth, "It might take another two hours. You rest up, and I'll be home to keep you company later."
Brittany was always understanding and rarely pried into Isaac's work. She nodded after hearing his response, "All right, you carry on."
After hanging up, Isaac turned to see Joie looking weak after a blood draw.
"Are you okay?"
"Bro Isaac, it hurts a lot."
Joie reached out to grab Isaac's hand, but he stepped back half a step.
Seeing the disappointment in Joie's eyes, he cleared his throat and explained.
"I'm sorry, I'm married."
