When she stopped calling him by his name, Gavin’s eyes sparkled, a rush of excitement running through him.
“I’m not using you just to make things awkward with Lance. I really just want to be your friend, help out when Adelina gives you a hard time, and maybe enjoy the drama a little from the sidelines.”
Catherine shook her head. “Friendship goes both ways. Sorry, but I don’t want to be friends with you.”
Gavin just grinned. “Then I’ll chase after you instead. I don’t need your permission for that.”
“You should really go back to the hospital,” Catherine said, her face darkening. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going home.”
If he wasn’t feeling well, he needed to stay in treatment. What was he even doing out here?
Gavin laughed quietly. “Alright, I won’t disturb your rest. I’ll call you later.”
He stepped aside, and Catherine slipped past him, heading upstairs without looking back. The moment she got home, she blocked Gavin’s number.

At ten o’clock that morning, the top-floor conference room at SilverLeaf Industries was filled with executives waiting for Lance’s instructions. Behind his gold-rimmed glasses, Lance’s eyes were as dark as midnight as he flipped through documents about the Green family partnership.
He lifted his coffee cup, only to realize it was empty.
“Catherine, bring me another coffee.”
The room went dead quiet. Everyone’s eyes went straight to Adelina, who was seated next to him.
Adelina’s face turned pale, her eyes wide as she stared at Lance in disbelief. He didn’t notice at all, still absorbed in the file in front of him.
When no one responded, he frowned and looked up.
“Lance, Catherine’s out sick. I’ll get you some coffee,” Aaron said quickly, stepping forward to grab the cup before heading out.
Lance took off his glasses and rubbed his brow, finally glancing at Adelina, who looked like she was about to burst into tears. His voice was cool. “It’s just a habit.”
