“Your husband didn’t come with you today?”
The doctor glanced over Catherine’s ultrasound report as she spoke. “The baby’s growing perfectly. Even though you’re a young mom, it’s really best if the dad can be involved during your pregnancy and after the baby’s born.”
Catherine forced a little smile. “He had something come up. He couldn’t make it.”
“When you come back for your next scan, make sure he comes with you. You’ll be able to see if the baby looks more like you or him. It’s a special moment for a dad to bond with his child.”
The OB-GYN was a woman in her forties, gentle and warm.
“Young couples these days never seem to take raising kids seriously. You came to your last appointment alone too. The father has to be part of this. Doing it all yourself will be exhausting, and for a child, growing up without a father present… it really does have an impact.”
Catherine just sat there, listening quietly, not able to say a word. But the doctor’s words stuck with her. Each one seemed to settle deeper in her chest.
A world without a father. It would affect the child.
Catherine was still lost in thought when she got to Lorinda’s place. The doctor’s words were echoing in her head.
“Hey, what are you daydreaming about?” Lorinda waved a hand in front of her face. “I’m talking to you. So, what’s your plan?”
That question. It was like a ritual every time they saw each other.
Catherine snapped out of it, sighing. “I have to wait for the right moment. If nothing comes up, I’ll just have to wait until my contract is over.”
Her instincts told her Adelina would never let her stay with Lance.
Lorinda sucked in a sharp breath. “Aren’t you scared someone will find out?”
“Of course I am.” Catherine nodded. “Deciding to keep this baby was a huge gamble. Things aren’t going my way right now, but that doesn’t mean I’ll definitely lose.”
