Work had been nonstop for Catherine, so much so that even weekends blurred into overtime. When she finally managed to get two days off, the first thing she did was head to the hospital for a checkup.
She kept a low profile, wearing a mask and a hat, wrapping herself up so thoroughly that barely a hint of her face showed. Most of the women waiting for prenatal appointments had someone with them—a partner, a friend, a parent. In the middle of all these couples, Catherine sat alone in the corner, making her stand out even more.
From beneath her hat, her clear eyes landed on a young couple not far away. She had overheard them earlier, chatting about how they got pregnant just three months after getting married. The excitement between them was so obvious, their faces glowing with happiness and anticipation.
Catherine’s hand rested gently on her stomach as she watched them, a small smile sneaking onto her lips. She was looking forward to meeting her baby, too.
“Catherine?”
She looked up, caught off guard by a familiar voice. A man holding some lab results was looking right at her, head tilted as if trying to make sure it was really her. Her smile faltered.
“I knew it. It really is you!” Gavin sounded genuinely surprised. He started walking over, almost bumping into a pregnant woman on the way. “What are you doing here?”
It was too late to pretend she was someone else. She forced herself to stand up, trying to act casual. “Just here for a checkup.”
Gavin glanced around at all the pregnant women waiting. “A prenatal checkup?”
“It’s just a regular women’s health exam. They include ultrasounds,” Catherine replied, keeping her voice steady.
There were a few other women waiting for gynecology appointments, so it wasn’t totally out of place. Still, Gavin didn’t look convinced. He gave her a long, careful once-over. “You’re looking fine to me. Why the sudden need for a checkup?”
“I took sick leave because my stomach was acting up. Since I was already coming, I figured I might as well get a full checkup,” Catherine said smoothly, steering the conversation away from herself. “How about you, Gavin? Still stuck in the hospital?”
Gavin’s expression darkened as he sat down next to her. “Thanks to Lance, I’m going to be here for a while.”
At least as long as he was staying in the hospital, he could use his health as an excuse for losing his job. If he got discharged, everyone would know he’d been shoved out by Lance.
“Then I won’t keep you. You should get back and rest.” Catherine felt herself getting anxious as he settled in beside her.
Gavin just crossed his legs, making himself comfortable. “I’ve been so bored these days, I’m practically losing it. Might as well hang out with you to pass the time.”
