Catherine emptied her stomach, her lunch coming up in waves until tears and snot mixed on her face. The sour taste burned all the way down, leaving her shaken and raw.
When there was nothing left, she crouched in the corner, trying to catch her breath.
“You haven’t seen a doctor, have you?” Lance’s voice drifted over from nearby.
It took her a second to remember he was even there. She dug a tissue out of her purse and wiped her face, trying to pull herself together. “Sorry. That was... embarrassing. You can wait for me in the car if you want.”
Lance leaned back against the wall, a bottle of water in his hand. “I don’t remember your stomach ever being this bad before.”
It was true. Back then, it was just pain and a pale face, not all this vomiting. But now, in just two days, he’d seen her throw up twice.
“Thanks.” Her features were calm and pretty, but there was a polite distance in her eyes.
After a moment, she decided not to beat around the bush. “My stomach’s been acting up a lot lately. That’s why I wanted to resign. I really need to take care of my health.”
Lance walked over, his tall frame blocking out the light. “We have sick leave, Catherine. If you need time, just apply for it.”
Quitting her job just to recover didn’t sound like her at all. He couldn’t help but connect her resignation to Gavin.
Catherine had her own thoughts. She figured he was just making her stay so he could use her as leverage against Adelina. Once he got what he wanted, he’d go back to sweet-talking Adelina, and they’d be closer than ever. Meanwhile, Catherine would be the only one left out in the cold.
“If it’s okay, I want to take two days off next week,” she said, picking her moment.
She still hadn’t had her prenatal check-up, and she was already overdue.
“Fine,” Lance agreed right away.
After getting it all out of her system, Catherine felt lightheaded, but at least she could breathe again.
Lance ended up driving her to the business dinner.
