She stepped out of the car and made her way around to the driver’s side, tugging Gavin away from the door.
“Thanks, Lance. Drive safe,” she called over her shoulder before turning to leave.
Gavin leaned against the car window, frowning. “What happened? Who was that? Did someone mess with her?”
Catherine came back, grabbed Gavin by the sleeve, and pulled him away from Lance’s car. She could feel Lance’s glare on them, sharp and tense, like he’d tear Gavin apart if he said one more word. It wasn’t that she thought Gavin would actually get hurt, but something about Lance’s mood made her anxious. She just wanted Lance to go, and Gavin was only making it worse.
Lance’s eyes narrowed as he watched Catherine dragging Gavin away. The clear look in his eyes grew darker, something brooding settling there.
Catherine hurried Gavin inside. She closed the door behind them, blocking out that intense stare, and finally let herself breathe for a moment.
“What happened?” Gavin pressed, following her. “Did someone give you trouble?”
She shook her head. “No, it was nothing. Just a misunderstanding.”
She headed toward her room, but after a couple steps, she turned back. “I need to go see Lorinda. You should head home.”
Gavin trailed after her, catching sight of Lance’s car disappearing at the end of the street. “So why did Lance give you a ride? Is he trying to get you back at work? Maybe he regrets letting you go.”
“You’re reading too much into it. He just happened to be passing by and offered me a lift, that’s all.”
Trying to convince herself as much as Gavin, Catherine closed the door and walked toward Lorinda’s place.
Gavin watched her walk away, scratching his head. “What’s Lance up to? Is he trying to steal Catherine back? Maybe he’s trying to warn me off. I should call him and figure this out…”
He pulled out his phone and started dialing Lance’s number.

Inside the quiet car, Catherine’s scent still lingered in the air, soft and familiar. Lance closed his eyes for a second, letting memories flicker to life in his mind. The sudden ring of his phone snapped him out of it. He glanced at the screen and hit decline without a second thought.
The phone rang again. He blocked the number.
