The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 454

If the Main Family started believing this baby was Gavin’s, they’d come for her too. She’d be trading one mess for another, running from the James Family just to land in the Main Family’s crosshairs. Was she trying to make her life even harder? She’d end up on both their bad sides.

“Catherine, it’s nearly impossible to convince the James Family this baby isn’t Lance’s,” Gavin said, sounding deadly serious. “But it’s actually really easy to prove to my family that it isn’t mine. My dad and everyone else will keep it quiet. I mean, I embarrassed Lance by stealing you away in public. My dad’s probably thrilled about it.”

If Catherine could just show the Main Family that the baby wasn’t Gavin’s, they wouldn’t bother trying to shut down the rumors. Every bit of gossip was just another way for the Main Family to get back at the James Family.

Gavin wasn’t the only one who could see all this coming. Lance could see it too. Still, he wanted Catherine to make her own decision.

A sharp ache pressed against Catherine’s chest, making it hard to breathe, almost like her whole body was filling up with a heavy, sour feeling.

“This is the only way I can think of to protect you,” Gavin said. “If you’re not comfortable, you can say no, but you need to really think about it. Otherwise, things with the James Family will only get messier.”

Gavin started the car and headed home.

He could tell Lance was trying to protect Catherine. And now, protecting her felt like second nature to him too.

Who would Catherine trust to keep her safe? Her choice would say everything about whether she was thinking with her head or her heart.

She climbed out of Gavin’s car and walked home, arms wrapped tight around herself. She barely made it a few steps before someone draped a jacket over her shoulders. Gavin had gotten out and caught up to her.

“If I’ve made things harder for you, I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “I’ll clear things up with everyone if you want. But I really hope you think about it. My way could work.”

Catherine just stood there, looking lost.

Gavin nodded at her, then went back to his car and drove off toward his apartment.

Catherine turned and went inside. The house was dark, but she moved upstairs like she’d done it a hundred times before. She sat down on the floor at the end of her bed and leaned her head back, her thoughts all tangled up.
