“You’ve got it all wrong. The baby isn’t Lance’s.”
Catherine shot back, her voice steady. “I got pregnant six months after Lance and I divorced.”
Belinda let out a laugh, sharp and cold. “You’re something else, you know that? You always knew I’d never accept you. You knew I’d never let you have Lance’s child while you two were married. So you planned it out, got divorced just to throw me off guard...”
Catherine couldn’t help but laugh. The drama Belinda invented was honestly ridiculous. Still, she had to admit, if this rumor spread, the society crowd would eat it up. In their world, everyone assumed you had an agenda if you got close to them.
“I’m not after your money or your status, and honestly, I never loved Lance that much. I wouldn’t go to all this trouble just to stick around him. This baby has nothing to do with Lance, or the James family.”
Catherine kept it short and to the point, then hung up.
Belinda immediately called again. The phone rang a few times before Catherine rejected the call. When Belinda tried once more, it didn’t even connect.
Was Catherine seriously blocking her?
For a second, Belinda’s world tilted. She sat back on the sofa and took a few deep breaths, then grabbed her phone and dialed Adelina.
“Belinda, sob, sob...” Adelina’s crying spilled through the phone. “Catherine is just the worst! Lance probably doesn’t want this to get out, he’s afraid of being embarrassed, so he’s letting her lead him around! What are we supposed to do now? How am I supposed to marry him?”
“Don’t cry, Adelina. Sweetheart, I’ll fly to Eldervale and handle this for you.” Belinda tried to calm her down. “Don’t fight with Lance over this, okay? Like you said, he has to protect the James family’s name and the company. Try to see things from his side.”
Adelina sniffed. “I get it. Don’t worry, I won’t make things harder for Lance. I won’t put the James family in a tough spot either.”
Belinda let out a breath. “Good girl. I knew you were smart. And listen, don’t tell your parents anything yet. No need to upset them all the way over in Cabinda. Let me take care of everything, alright?”
Thinking back to what happened at the mall, Catherine suddenly realized Adelina must have stirred things up again.
“When other people get pregnant, their families rally around them. You get pregnant and your ex-husband’s whole family is suddenly involved.”
Lorinda flopped back onto the playmat, sighing. “Sometimes I wonder if meeting Lance was just bad luck for you.”
Catherine slipped into the kitchen to cut up some fruit. When she came back, Jasper was already asleep in his crib.
“You’ve got almost everything ready for the baby. You should book a postnatal care place soon.”
Lorinda was rubbing her head, chewing on a piece of pineapple. “The one Alexa went to was really nice. Maybe you should check it out?”
