Lance let go of Adelina’s hand right at the hotel entrance.
She hadn’t expected it and stumbled backward, rubbing her wrist, her eyes darting up to meet his with a mix of worry and confusion.
“Lance, what’s going on?”
He stared at her, his eyes colder than the night air. “You tell me. What do you think is going on?”
Adelina slowly dropped her hand, gripping the edge of her dress as if that could keep her steady. She tried to sound casual, like nothing was wrong. “I haven’t seen Sally in ages. I just wanted to stay in Eldervale for a couple more days. You can’t control every little thing I do, right? I’ll get my check-up done when I’m back, I promise.”
Lance’s lips barely moved. “Just tell me, what were you planning with Catherine this time?”
For a second, Adelina looked caught, a flicker of embarrassment and panic flashing across her face. But she pulled herself together quickly.
“This isn’t about me. Catherine must’ve upset Sally somehow, and now Sally’s out to make things difficult for her.”
She’d rehearsed that excuse, but Lance didn’t even blink.
“Is that so.”
He didn’t call her out, didn’t argue, just said, “Then you go sort things out with Sally.”
Adelina’s head shot up. “You want me to help Catherine?”
Lance raised his eyebrows, just a little.
“Lance, I’m not a saint. I’m already being civil by not making things worse for her while Sally’s causing trouble. Help her? No way. She’s your ex-wife. Let’s be real, even the ex’s new partner wants to size up the competition. No one wants to just stand aside…”
She was just being honest, but somehow her words hit something in Lance. Even an ex’s new partner couldn’t help wanting to compete.
His eyes darkened, his brow tight.
“In that case, I’ll deal with Sally myself.” He cut her off, his voice final.
His business successes barely got a mention. Most of the stories were about his love life. There were endless tales of him looking for someone to marry, always meeting new women.
“He even went on a dating show. A big CEO looking for a wife on TV, not even embarrassed. No wonder he takes this stuff so seriously. He’s obsessed with finding a wife.”
Catherine leaned over to see for herself.
There were countless stories about Sebastian’s public search for a partner. He was picky, too. Every time, he was the one who decided the woman wasn’t right.
Now he was so upset because he’d actually liked Catherine. In a way, it was both flattering and a total headache.
Lorinda tried to lighten the mood. “Honestly, if Sebastian complains to Lance and Lance fires you, at least you can stay home and focus on your pregnancy.”
But “quitting” was one of those things they’d talked about so many times, and it never seemed to happen. Lorinda didn’t really expect anything to change.
“Tomorrow’s the weekend. I’m off work. I’ll go find him and explain everything. I swear, Sally’s definitely mixed up in this.”
