Sally perked up the moment she heard what the staff had to say. She was instantly on alert.
Thankfully, Lemuel was way too busy in the ballroom to pay any attention to Catherine. Otherwise, with the way he flirted with every woman in sight, he’d definitely be chasing after her right now.
“Did you find the person I asked you to?” Adelina’s voice dropped to a whisper. “If you help me get rid of this headache, Lance and I will head straight back to Cabinda and finally get married.”
Sally grinned, hiding her smile behind her hand. “I knew you couldn’t wait. Relax, I’ve got everything set up.”
She stood up from the sofa, tossing Adelina a quick look.
“Just watch. Things are about to get interesting.”
Adelina’s lips curled up. “Go on, then.”
—
Adela was surrounded by a tight circle of rich, well-dressed women.
Catherine hung back, waiting for the right moment.
“Catherine.”
A voice caught her from behind.
Turning, she found Geoffrey, a glass of red wine in hand.
“Geoffrey.” She nodded politely.
He glanced in the direction she’d been looking, eyes landing on Adela. “You’re…”
“I just wanted to say hi to Adela,” Catherine said honestly.
Geoffrey forced a smile, but his brows were drawn together.
“My wife really likes you,” he said, voice a little stiff. “She’s probably reached out a few times. If she’s been bothering you, I’m sorry, but I’d appreciate it if you could keep your distance from her.”
Catherine blinked, caught off guard. Her mind flashed back to that dinner, the way Adela had suddenly left after a mysterious phone call.
“Don’t get me wrong, I mean…” Geoffrey trailed off, clearly realizing how awkward he sounded. “My wife’s just a housewife. She’s got too much time on her hands. I’d hate for her to distract you from your work.”
Too bad she was new here. She didn’t know anyone, didn’t know the rules of this place.
“Catherine.”
Sally finally found her, face pinched with impatience. “Why are you wandering all over the place?”
Catherine felt a headache coming on. One after another, people just kept coming, and she couldn’t get rid of any of them.
“Sally.”
“I heard you’re about my age. I’m already several months pregnant, and you’re still single. Everyone here tonight is a big deal in Eldervale. Is there anyone you like? I can introduce you.”
Sally’s eyes swept over the crowd of young men.
Catherine had to admit, the Lee family members were all a bit much.
“Thanks, but you really don’t have to worry about me. I’m not planning on getting married any time soon.”
Sally raised an eyebrow. “So, what, none of the men here are good enough for you?” She twisted Catherine’s words on purpose.
