“Don’t stress yourself out,” Alexa said softly. “Kids get sick all the time. It’s probably just the weather these last couple of nights…”
“If I’d noticed sooner, his fever wouldn’t be this high. He’s burning up.” Lorinda’s voice broke as she spoke, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Jasper’s sharp cries filled the car, and Catherine’s anxiety only grew. She kept glancing at the rearview mirror, handing Lorinda tissues to wipe her eyes.
Out of nowhere, the car jolted hard with a loud crash.
“Oh my god!” Alexa gasped. “Did we just get hit?”
Catherine’s whole body tensed. Instinctively, she pressed her hand to her lower belly. Luckily, they were slowing for a red light, so the impact wasn’t too bad.
They’d been sideswiped by an SUV that tried to cut into their lane at the last second. Catherine’s car hit the back corner of the SUV.
“Are you blind? Who taught you to drive?” The SUV driver jumped out, already shouting as he waved a hand at them.
Catherine undid her seatbelt and stepped out to face him. “You cut me off. This is on you.”
“If you can’t drive, don’t get behind the wheel. Didn’t your instructor teach you to yield?” the man snapped. His eyes dropped to Catherine’s belly, which was showing a little under her fitted cotton dress.
“Oh, so you’re pregnant? Get someone else out here to talk to me.”
Lorinda handed Jasper to Alexa and got out too. “Doesn’t matter who talks to you. You’re still at fault. We need to get to the hospital. Just give us your number and we’ll talk about compensation later.”
“Compensation? For what? Do you two even know what you’re saying?” The man wouldn’t let up. “Find someone reasonable. Any decent man would know to let others go first!”
He saw movement in the car and stepped closer. “Let whoever’s inside come out. Maybe there’s at least one reasonable person in your group.”
Lorinda blocked the door, refusing to let him get near.
“Let’s call the police. They’ll sort this out. Stop trying to dodge responsibility.”
“Don’t you dare leave! Call someone who actually knows how to handle things. I want to see which fool would marry two unreasonable women like you!” The man slammed his palm on the hood.
The sound made everyone jump. Inside, Jasper’s crying only got louder.
Catherine hurried Lorinda into the car and turned to get in herself, not wanting to argue with this angry man. She was pregnant, Lorinda had her son, and it just wasn’t worth it.
But before she could climb in, the man grabbed her arm.
“Don’t run. Trying to escape because you know you’re guilty? No one leaves until that woman apologizes to me!”
Catherine was halfway in the car when he yanked her out. She stumbled back, caught totally off guard by how strong he was.
She lost her balance, her body tipping back. The crowd that had gathered gasped.
Catherine clutched her belly and sucked in a shaky breath, fear rising in her chest. Just as panic was about to take over, she felt a strong arm wrap around her waist. Her back pressed into a solid, unfamiliar chest.
