Harrell’s jaw tightened.
“I’m only staying in Eldervale for a couple of days, just to keep Lance company. When I head back, you’re coming with me.” Adelina’s voice left no room for argument. She’d already decided for him.
“We’ll talk about it later.” Harrell didn’t exactly agree, but he didn’t say no either.
Adelina shot him a look, like she wanted to say something else. Instead, she stood up. “I’m going to the bathroom.”
Lance hadn’t said a word the whole time. He just stared at his watch, watching the second hand make its rounds.
The whole room settled into an awkward quiet.
After a pause, Harrell finally spoke up. “Lance, can I ask you something?”
“Go ahead.” Lance barely moved his lips.
“Do you think Adelina likes you?”
The question made Lance frown. He turned his gaze toward Harrell.
Harrell spoke slowly, almost philosophical. “People always say women are more emotional. They’ll lose their heads for someone they like, do all kinds of wild things. So when she asked you to marry her, that had to mean something, right? No woman would marry a guy she doesn’t like.”
“There are plenty of women out there who care only about money,” Lance replied, blunt as ever.
“Sure, but you have to ask if she actually needs money. If she doesn’t, or if she never spent yours after you got married, then maybe she just wanted you for you.”
Harrell’s point was clear. Why did Adelina marry Lance? But Lance’s mind drifted to Catherine instead.
Why did Catherine marry him? She’d always been careful with money, barely spent anything, and when they got divorced, she didn’t ask for a thing.
So did that mean, by Harrell’s logic, she actually liked him?
Lance’s face softened, the harshness fading.
“I’m going to the bathroom,” Harrell said, making a move to get up. His legs bumped the chair, but it wouldn’t budge. He tried again and ended up sitting right back down.
