Their eyes met in the rearview mirror, just as the first neon lights of the evening spilled into the car, casting shifting patterns of light and shadow across the seats. All Catherine could really see was the deep set of his eyes, so dark they almost looked endless.
She was the first to glance away, focusing back on the road.
“He’s nothing compared to you, Lance,” she said quietly.
Lance didn’t miss a beat. “That’s true.”
His voice was cool, almost mocking. “Your taste is getting worse.”
Catherine blinked, caught off guard by the random jab. She had no idea how she’d ended up on the receiving end of his criticism.
“You’re right, Lance,” she replied after a moment, her tone even. Then she added, “But my personal life is really none of your concern. And I hope you can keep things professional between us.”
Her life had nothing to do with him, and whatever was going on between Lance and Adelina shouldn’t involve her either.
Lance didn’t react, just rubbed his thumb along the face of his watch, his expression unreadable.
Half an hour later, they pulled up to the Lee family estate.
Catherine stepped out of the car, her light gray dress brushing just above her ankles, flats soft on the stone driveway. Standing next to Lance, she barely reached his shoulder. The difference in their heights, their striking features, the way they carried themselves—it all made them hard to miss.
They’d hardly had a chance to settle before Geoffrey and Adela came over to greet them.
“Lance, we’ve heard so much about you. It’s really an honor to have you here for our anniversary,” Geoffrey said, his tone respectful.
He was about the same age as Garrison, but he didn’t seem to mind putting himself in a lower position with someone younger like Lance. You could tell he was the kind of person who knew when to keep his ego in check.
Lance’s response was smooth. “Thank you, Geoffrey. It’s my pleasure. I’m happy to celebrate with you.”
“I hear your wedding is coming up soon. I hope I’ll be lucky enough to get an invitation to the big day,” Geoffrey teased.
Lance just smiled, and the two of them walked off together.
